ALL-RUSSIAN STATE INSTITUTE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY

1. The Institute was founded on September, 1, 1919 as the first State Cinema School. Directors V.Gardin and L.Kuleshov were the organizers and the first teachers. In 1930 the State Cinema School (college) was transformed into the State Institute of Cinemato-graphy. In 1985 it was named after S.A.Gerasimov.
The Institute academic staff included many famous directors and actors: S.Eizenstein, V.Pudovkin, A.Dovzhenko, I.Pyryev, M.Romm, G.Kozintsev, R.Karmen, B.Babochkin,, B.Balash, E.Tisse, A.Golovnya, Yu.Pimenov, I.Ivanov-Vano and others.
The present teaching staff members are: M.Khutziyev, V.Yusov, I.Kvirikadze, P.Lebeshev, A.Kochetkov, V.Yezhov, V.Chernykh, R.Yurenev, A.Filozov, A.Batalov, A.Dzhigarkhanyan, I.Vaisfeld and others.
Among the Institute graduates there are directors A.Tarkovsky, N.Mikhalkov, A.Konchalovsky, E.Klimov, T.Abuladze, K.Shakhnazarov, V.Abdra-shitov, V.Pichul, script writers E.Volodarsky, V.Me-rezhko, actors and directors V.Shukshin, S.Bon-darchuk, N.Gubenko, R.Nakhapetov,
Cinematographers V.Nakhabtsev, A.Kalashnikov V.Yusov and others.
The present Rector of the Institute is Professor A.V.Novikov.

2. The Institute comprises the following faculties and departments: director's art, actor's art, camera work, script writing and the study of cinematography (departments of script writing and the study of cinema), art, economics.
The Institute structure includes: a research laboratory of economic, social and aesthetic problems of cinematography development, a laboratory of the soviet and foreign cinema, a library, a computing unit.

3. 217 teachers and lecturers work at the Institute, among them - 20 Doctors of Sciences, 97 Candidates of Sciences.

4. Students are trained in 8 specialties: director's art; Cinematography; literary work; actor's art; painting; the study of cinema; economics and management in social and cultural sphere; sound engineering.
The Institute provides postgraduate training in the following specialties: cinema and television, economics, planning and organization of national economy. There is a Specialized Council for awarding higher degrees.

5. The Institute's research program corresponds to the specialists' training orientation.
6. The Institute is a member of the International Association of Cinema Schools (CILECT).
